K-2 Early Elementary Kit cover with Kai the puppy mascot waving, FOCUS workbook, Teacher Pack, and READY framework cards
Designed by Heather Schneiter — Academic Technologist with an M.S. in Education Technology from Minnesota State University Mankato and creator of the FOCUS and READY AI literacy frameworks. Every activity in this kit was built from real classroom experience, not generated from a template.
Meet Kai
You are the thinker. AI is the tool.
How It Works
How it fits your weekend
Three ways to use the kit on the weekends you actually have.
1
Saturday morning, 30 minutes
Pick one section. Read together. Draw together. Talk through the FOCUS letter that matches what you read. Use the Family Guide if you want context for yourself first.
2
Dinner conversations during the week
Pull a discussion prompt at dinner. 25 age-appropriate questions, ready to go. No prep. Builds the shared vocabulary you both use to talk about AI.
3
Sign the AI Promise together
End your time together with the My AI Promise page. Both of you sign it. Hang it on the fridge. That is the start of a real family conversation about AI that will keep going as your kid grows.
FOCUS framework for young thinkers: Function, Objective, Context, User and Tone, Specifics with kid-friendly explanations

You do not need to be an AI expert

Heather designed this kit so a parent with zero background in AI or formal teaching can lead it. The Family Guide explains the framework in plain language. The activities work without any technology. The vocabulary is what your kid will hear at school anyway.

  • Family Guide written for parents and caregivers, not teachers
  • All activities are pencil and paper, no tech required
  • Ages 5-7, with built-in support for older or younger siblings
  • Focuses on critical thinking, honesty, and safety
  • Free of religious or political framing

Common Questions
Frequently Asked
I do not know much about AI. Is that a problem?
No. The Family Guide gives you the words. The framework is simple: FOCUS for asking AI good questions, READY for evaluating what comes back. Both are written at K-2 reading level, which means they are written for adults who do not want to be lectured at either.
How old is this designed for?
Ages 5 to 7, kindergarten through second grade. If your kid is younger, slow the pace and read more of it aloud. If they are older but new to AI, the FOCUS framework still works. The pacing guide gives you options.
Do we need any technology?
Not for the activities. They are pencil and paper. After a section, you can try out an AI tool together if you want, but it is optional. You decide what tech your family is ready for.
Is this religious or values-based?
No. The kit focuses on critical thinking, honesty, safety, and responsibility. It is free of religious or political framing. The goal is to give your family a shared language for talking about AI as it shows up in your kid's life.
